About Rivenwood Coppice

Iain on a shave horse

I am a coppice worker, charcoal maker and greenwood craftsman based in Tottenham, London.

I have been coppicing woodland in London and Hertfordshire since 2007 when I decided to give up office life as a computer programmer and take to the woods with my billhook.

I studied Forestry & Arboriculture at Capel Manor College and coppicing at the Green Wood Centre in Ironbridge and the Sustainability Centre in the South Downs.

I am First Aid at Work qualified, chainsaw certified and fully insured.

Coppicing in London

London might not be the first place you think of in relation to coppice and woodland but it remains one of the greenest cities in the world. There are a surprising number of ancient woodlands and nature reserves within the confines of the M25 and the surrounding areas contain many more.

Many of these sites have traditionally been managed to supply London and its surrounds with products made from wood such as charcoal and fencing. Although many are no longer actively managed for produce, they continue to provide a haven for wildlife and for people lucky enough to spend time in them.

Coppice products are traditional, local, sustainable alternatives to modern imported and mass-produced items such as bamboo canes.
